Hawaii is not all about beaches, luaus and beaches. It has given the world many famous people and some of them are as follows:

Alexander Cartwright: Known as the father of American baseball, Alexander Cartwright was born on April 17, 1820. He was officially credited with the invention of baseball. He established the Knickerbockers Baseball Club in 1842 and came up with the idea of a diamond shaped field for the game. He moved to California in 1849 and he taught baseball to all the towns on his way. Though he later became a successful businessman, he is still remembered as the inventor of baseball.

David Copperfield: David Copperfield was born on September 16, 1956. From the young age of 12, he started practicing magic and was the youngest magician in the The Society of American Magicians. His feats include walking through the Great Wall of China and making the Statue of Liberty disappear. He is the first magician who has received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame

Herman Frazier: Born on October 29, 1954, Herman Frazier went on to become one of the most famous athletes of his times. He started taking part in athletics during his school days in Germantown High School in Philadelphia. Though he started as a multiple sport athlete, it was the 4×400 m relay that earned him a gold medal in the Olympics in 1976. In one of the magazines called The Black Enterprise, he was named as one of the 50 most powerful African American sports persons.

This is not the end of the list of famous people from Hawaii. There are many others who were born in Hawaii and have gone on to become famous in their lives.

Hawaii – Islands of Adventure

Famous for its surfing beaches, Mai Tai’s & world famous shopping, Hawaii is a destination on top of many people’s travel lists. Among the many reasons why so many people choose Hawaii, adventure touring is high up on my list. You can do almost everything here which range from parasailing to volcano safaris to surfing lessons on Waikiki beach. Below is my story of my Hawaii adventure.

Shark Diving is one of my favourite adventure activities and located on the North Shore of Oahu’s island you can jump in the water with a large school of Galapagos sharks. These mid depth sharks follow the sounds of fishing boats in hope of a free feed and the sound of any boat within these waters will bring the predators to the surface. Underwater it is such a surreal experience watching these sharks coming within centimetres of the cage and from all directions. Depending on the day you can see around 20 of these sharks around the cage and the boat.

Hawaii’s marine life doesn’t stop at just sharks, dolphin swims are very popular whether you are swimming with a wild pod of dolphins or taking a visit to Honolulu’s Sea Life Park. At this marine park the dolphin swim includes a kiss and cuddle from the dolphins which makes for great photos but you also get to have a play around with them too. Getting a dorsal tow from two of the dolphins and being pushed across the surface of the water are just some of the activities that you can do with these beautiful creatures. Of all the tours in Hawaii that you can do this one is what will make all your friends and family envious. Within the park there are other species of marine life such as penguins, sea lions, sea turtles, stings rays and other tropical reef fish. In the reef tank you can put on something like a space helmet and actually walk through the aquarium and hand feed the friendly Eagle Ray. The sea trek is probably the most unique adventure activity I have ever experienced.

If you are after unique tours and experiences then another activity to consider is the Atlantis Submarine. Submerging down to 104ft below the water’s surface to ship and plane wrecks is a wondrous experience. Among the wrecks many reef fish such as Butterfly Fish, Amberjack’s, Porcupine Puffer-fish as well as Sea Turtles, reef sharks and if you’re lucky you may see humpback whales in season. At 104ft below the reefs looks other worldly among the wrecks but on the contrary the wrecks provide shelter so this delicate eco system can thrive.

Hawaii is a place of unlimited adventure, excitement and fun for the whole family. The activities here are no like no other place on Earth so don’t miss out on booking some sort of adventure tour. Here I have just given you some ideas of adventure tours but there are many others such as Whale Watching, Kualoa Ranch, Pearl Harbour, Kayaking tours, Snorkelling and many more.

English-Only Rules Present High Risk to Hawaii Employers

Title VII prohibits discrimination because of “national origin.” The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the agency charged with the enforcement of Title VII, defines national origin discrimination as the denial of equal employment opportunity because of an individual’s ancestry, place of origin, or because the individual possesses the physical, cultural, or linguistic characteristics of a national origin group.

The EEOC has consistently scrutinized English-Only policies very closely and has taken the position that such policies can be a proxy for national origin discrimination. Given the amount of attention given to immigration issues on a national scale, the significant increase in national origin claims being filed with the EEOC in the last few years is no surprise. Many of these claims arise from employers promulgating English-Only policies. In the EEOC’s view only the most limited policies do not violate Title VII.

Recently, the EEOC brought suit against a California Nursing Home company that prohibited Spanish-speaking employees from speaking Spanish to Spanish-speaking residents, and also while on breaks or in the parking lot of the facilities.

According to the EEOC, in addition to being required to comply with an overbroad English-Only policy that the employer did not apply even-handedly, it was alleged that Hispanic employees were given desirable work than non-Hispanic counterparts, were paid less, and promoted less often. In April 2009 the EEOC and the company settled for $450,000.

Hawaii employers are also finding it difficult to balance legitimate business needs and Hawaii employment practices law prohibiting ancestry or national origin discrimination. Hawaii law, HRS Chapter 378, prohibits discriminating against an employee in the terms or conditions of employment, because of their “ancestry.” However, as a practical matter “ancestry” and “national origin” are synonymous under Hawaii law.

Hawaii law is arguably more expansive than Title VII in that employers are precluded from making pre-employment inquiries and requests for information which tend to lead to disclosure of the person’s ancestry/national origin, unless the inquiry is justified by a bona fide occupational qualification.

Both the EEOC and the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission (“HCRC”) have issued regulations addressing the issue of English-Only rules and whether and to what extent employers prohibiting foreign languages to be spoken in the workplace have violated the prohibition against national origin discrimination.

The EEOC and HCRC’s regulations presume that blanket English-Only rules are per se unlawful. Their position also is that limited English-Only policies are lawful only if justified by business necessity. 2002 EEOC guidelines list the following examples where business necessity justifies an English-Only policy:

o For communications with customers, coworkers, or supervisors who speak only English;
o in emergencies or other situations where workers must speak a common language to promote safety;
o for cooperative work assignments in which the English-Only rule is needed to promote efficiency;
o to enable a supervisor who only speaks English to monitor the performance of an employee whose job duties require communication with coworkers or customers.

Employers with English-Only rules should also consider doing the following:

o Implement cultural sensitivity training programs for supervisors;
o provide non-native English-speaking employees English classes;
o ensure to the extent possible an even-handed application of the rule;
o draft or revise the English-Only rule as narrowly as possible;
o give employees fair notice of the rule and consequences for violating the policy;
o have the policy written in other languages spoken in the workplace.
